WSI Oak Ridge hosts leadership forum

WSI's Oak Ridge team recently hosted the final program of the 2007 Leadership Oak Ridge program. John Burleson, WSI's general manager, addressed the group and Courtney Henry, WSI-OR public affairs specialist and a participant in the 2007 program, gave a presentation on writing press releases during the group's Media Day program. Other speakers included Darrell Richardson, managing editor of the Oak Ridger, and Knox County Commissioner Mike Hammond, director of operations for Citadel Communications in Knoxville.

Leadership Oak Ridge is designed to develop and expand the leadership potential existing in the community by identifying current and emerging leaders, developing the skills necessary for assuming effective leadership roles in the community, and identifying opportunities for participation in community activities.

WSI Holston firefighters excel in surprise drill

Congratulations to the Wackenhut Services team at the Holston Army Ammunition Plant for receiving a score of 97 out of 100 following  a recent unannounced drill and evaluation.

The WSI fire department received a spot fire and emergency services operational readiness inspection in late March by the Joint Munitions Command Safety Office. The drill involved responding to a fire at a remote location, extricating and treating a victim, and clearing the building of dense smoke.

WSI firefighters are on duty around the clock at Holston to provide fire prevention, fire suppression, emergency medical services, HazMat and confined-space rescue coverage.

WSI team members serving the public, literally

Wackenhut Services Savannah River Site team members will give new meaning to the term "community service" this weekend when they'll be participating with Aiken local law enforcement officers in the annual "Cops and Lobsters" program, according to the Aiken Standard.

Each year the law enforcement officers join together to raise money for the South Carolina Special Olympics by waiting on diners at Aiken's Red Lobster and accepting donations for the charity.

Former UT athletes now on Wackenhut Services team

Great story in the premier edition of Wackenhut Services, Inc. Connections magazine about former University of Tennessee varsity athletes who are now members of Wackenhut's Oak Ridge Team.

The group of Security Police Officers includes Tony White, who averaged over 17 points a game as a guard for the UT basketball team and led the Southeastern Athletic Conference (SEC) in scoring twice.  He finished his collegiate career with over 2,200 points.

Pat Hatmaker played 128 games for Pat Summit's Lady Vols in the 1980s and joined WSI in 1987. Linebacker Ben Talley was selected the All SEC second team after leading the Vols with 87 tackles in 1993. He joined Wackenut in 2004.

Other UT athletes now working for WSI at Oak Ridge include former Vols football players Nate Sumpter, Mario Brunson, Jesse Sanders, and John Brown.

"I am honored to have these fine people as members of the WSI Oak Ridge team," Senior VP and General Manager John Burleson told Connections. "The work ethic they gained from their sports careers has made them leaders and has earned them the admiration of their colleagues."
