WSI-OR participates in planning for United Way of Anderson County's kick-off event

Members of Wackenhut Services, Inc.'s Oak Ridge team are part of the planning committee for the United Way of Anderson County's 2007 kick-off event, a 50s/60s Sock Hop, slated for September in Oak Ridge.

WSI-OR is one of the primary event sponsors and General Manager John Burleson is serving as the event chair. WSI-OR Public Affairs Officer Courtney Henry is on the planning committee as well.

The United Way of Anderson County supports the work of 33 non-profit agencies in the Oak Ridge region.

Three reach 20-year mark at Nevada Test Site

Congratulations to WSI-Nevada Test Site team members Daniel Cowan, Michael Demesquita and Jay Warner who recently celebrated their 20-year service anniversaries. Kudos as well to Jose Valencia who celebrated his five-year service anniversary.

Steve Shoopman promoted at Oak Ridge

Congratulations to Steve Shoopman of the Wackenhut Service, Inc.-Oak Ridge team, who has been promoted to tactical plans manager, according to the Oak Ridger.

Steve has been with WSI for 22 years and was previously a senior planner in the Tactical Planning Section.

WSI Oak Ridge security officers approve contract

WSI security officers at the Oak Ridge, Tennessee complex ratified a new five-year contract Tuesday night.

"Wackenhut is excited to move forward with our mission of protecting the facilities and assets in Oak Ridge," WSI Public Affairs Officer Courtney Henry said in a statement to the Oak Ridger.

"I'm excited it's over," Randy Lawson, president of Local No. 3, International Guards Union of America, told the Knoxville News Sentinel.

In May, WSI was awarded a new five-year contract to continue providing paramilitary protective force and guard services for the Oak Ridge complex, which includes the Y-12 National Security Complex, the Oak Ridge National Laboratory, and other facilities. WSI has been at Oak Ridge since 2000.

WSI Nevada Test Site team assisting local elementary school

As part of their commitment to making a difference locally, WSI Nevada Test Site employees are members of the Clark County School District's Community Partnership Program, in which businesses help the schools address various issues. WSI is paired with Quannah McCall (QM) Elementary School, an inner-city, at-risk school.

Over the years WSI employees have remained committed to supporting QM in ways that encourage literacy, learning and staying in school. One of those ways is the annual School Supplies Drive going on now. WSI employees are donating items including pencils, paper, notebooks, binders, and other supplies used by teachers and students in the classroom.

WSI Nevada Test Site again attains STAR status

Congratulations to Dave Bradley and his entire WSI Nevada Test Site team on being recognized for a seventh consecutive year as a Department of Energy Voluntary Protection Program (VPP) STAR organization! On July 30, NNNSA officials presented the STAR certificate and flag to the WSI Nevada team.

STAR status under this program recognizes excellence in safety and health performance. To attain it means to meet or exceed OSHA standards.

Rich Shook, ES&H Manager, and his fellow safety professionals, worked alongside SPO Darlene Smith, Chairperson of the Employee Safety Committee (ESC), and her committee members to prepare for the VPP assessment.

WSI endorses plan for federal contracts database

Wackenhut Services Inc. President and CEO David Foley recently expressed support for the creation of a comprehensive contracts database to monitor the federal procurement system.

"It's a good idea to establish a central location for storing information on the performance of federal contractors so long as this information is absolutely correct," he said.

"We welcome any objective review of our work," he added. "We're confident tht any objective evaluation of WSI's performance will reflect that the more than 8,000 hard-working men and women of WSI perform superbly in protecting our nation."

Benjamin Walker and Daniel Webb Promoted

Congratulations to Benjamin Walker and Daniel Webb of WSI's Oak Ridge Team! In July they were promoted to sergeant, security police officer II at the Y-12 National Security Complex. Both previously were security police officer II in the perimeter sector patrol at Y-12.
