New Oak Ridge indoor firing range spotlighted in NNSA newsletter

The October edition of the National Nuclear Security Administration's (NNSA) monthly newsletter has a great story on page three about the opening of the new indoor firing range at the Oak Ridge Central Training Facility, which is managed by Wackenhut Services, Inc.

The new facility is the largest indoor range in the Department of Energy. The range is 20 positions wide, 50 yards deep, and can accommodate both rifle and handgun rounds.

Also, on the cover of this month's newsletter is a great photo of WSI's Mary Baird, a security police officer at the Y-12 National Security Complex, posing with WSI's new Dillon Aero Gatling Gun.

WSI Jet Propulsion Lab team assists LA County fire fighters

Recently read about another great example of Wackenhut Services, Inc. supporting the local community while serving its customer.

On a Sunday afternoon in late August, the WSI Jet Propulsion Lab (JPL) Fire Department swung into action to support the community and protect the laboratory. On duty Fire Captain Alex Villegas and his crew responded to a request for support from the Los Angeles County Fire Department and reported to the JPL helicopter pad to prepare to refill county fire fighting helicopters.

The crew rapidly and professionally set up the landing area and ultimately supported 20 helicopter sorties. The efforts of the WSI fire fighters aided the local community and the JPL by helping contain a brush fire that had come within three miles of JPL property.

Congratulations to Captain Villegas and his fire fighters on a job well done!

Three WSI Officers at West Sound Base Lauded

Earlier this year, WSI Security Officers Norman West, Erin Byrd and Randy Thompson of West Sound Base received an award for customer service from the Project Superintendent of the USS Jimmy Carter.

In a letter to WSI site manager John Howry, James D. Corbin of the USS Jimmy Carter noted,

"I have witnessed these individuals in the day and in the night, in the sun and in the pouring rain when the wind was howling and the temperatures freezing, at the busy Main, Trigger, or Lower Base Gate or the lonely post of Service Pier...The elements, people and assignments never wavered the positive, alert, and courteous behavior of these three officers. In the stressful, sometimes thankless profession of law enforcement the ability to maintain a positive, courteous, and up-beat attitude is not easy; however, these officers have displayed over a long period of time that they have the ability to overcome all obstacles and deliver a service second to none."

Norm West has been Security Officer at West Sound Base for six years, Randy Thompson for three years and Erin Byrd for three years. Congratulations to Norm, Randy and Erin!
