Knoxville News Sentinel item on Oak Ridge SPOTC team

Knoxville News Sentinel blog today has photos and a story on the WSI - Oak Ridge team's second place finish in the recent national Security Police Office Training Competition (SPOTC) in Albuquerque, New Mexico. In addition to finishing second overall, the team won the Competitor's Choice Award, which was voted on by the event participants.

WSI-SRS Aviation Team earns national recognition

Congratulations to the WSI-Savannah River Site Aviation Team on earning the U.S. Department of Energy's 2007 Jeff Snow Aviation Program Memorial Award. The team, comprised of the DOE-Savannah River Operations Office and WSI, has received the award five times in the past seven years.

The DOE award is based on the evaluation of excellence and innovation in five key performance areas: Management and Administration, Operations, Maintenance, Training, and Safety. The DOE Savannah River Operations Office provides line management and oversight policy direction for the aviation program, and WSI operates and maintains the two DOE-owned helicopters at SRS.

"This achievement was made possible by our exceptional partnership with the Department of Energy aviation oversight team at SRS," said James H. Isom, WSI's general manager at the site. "The SRS Aviation team plays a critical role in our security mission at SRS, and we're pleased that the program has been validated by the Department of Energy and the Federal Aviation Administration."

"The SRS Aviation Program is one of the strongest, most effective and safest in DOE because of the teamwork between the DOE-SR Aviation Manager and Aviation Safety Officer, and WSI-SRS," said Robert G. Jenkins, director of the DOE Office of Aviation Management.

Oak Ridger story on WSI-Oak Ridge performance at SPOTC

Good story in today's Oak Ridger on the performance of the WSI-Oak Ridge team in the annual Security Protection Officer Training Competition (SPOTC) held recently at the U.S. Department of Energy National Training Center in Albuquerque, New Mexico.

WSI-Oak Ridge finished second overall behind WSI-Savannah River Site and received the prestigious Competitors' Choice Award, which is voted on by all participants and honors the team with the most professionalism, spirit and sportsmanship.

Congratulations to the WSI-OR team, which was led by coaches Tim Ford and Lynn Bales and captain T.J. Fromberger. Other team members are: Matthew Carroll, Brad Carter, Steve Constant, Tony Stephens and Neal Wolfenbarger.

WSI teams excel at annual DOE SPOTC competition

Congratulations to Wackenhut Services, Inc.-Savannah River Site (WSI-SRS) team on winning the top award at the Department of Energy's (DOE) Security Protection Officer Training Competition (SPOTC) recently in Albuquerque, New Mexico.

WSI teams from Oak Ridge and Nevada Test Site placed second and fourth, respectively, in the eight-team competition, which included the largest sites in DOE.

Teams from WSI have earned the Secretary's Trophy five-out-of-the-last-six years. WSI-SRS has won the event eight times (1984, 1985, 1986, 1991, 2004, 2005, 2006, and 2008) and WSI-Oak Ridge, which began competing in 2000, won the trophy in 2003.

The WSI-SRS SPOTC team included Team Leader Casey Petosky, Tommy Goodson, Joshua Zeigler, Anthony Tisbert, Ncholas Mothershed, Jonathan Perry, and Gideon Hornung. Mike Howard, a Wackenhut Training Instructor, was the team coach, and Noel Hilton was the SPOTC fitness coach.

SPOTC is a tactical, skills-oriented firearms competition held at the National Training Center's Safeguards and Security Central Training Academy. The four-day competition was open to teams of protective offices from across the DOE community that competed in several categories.

WSI fire fighters providing training in Iraq

The Troop Scoop blog has some photos posted of WSI firefighters recently holding a fire warden workshop for U.S. servicemen and women in Iraq.

According to the blog, the class is designed to certify soldiers as fire wardens and liaisons between their unit and the FOB fire department.

Savannah River Site earns VFW Employer of the Year award

Congratulations to WSI-Savannah River Site on earning the 2008 Employer of the Year in the Large Business Federal Contractor Sector by the Veterans of Foreign Wars of the United States.

The annual VFW awards program recognizes five individuals and organizations for their efforts to promote veterans employment, training and advancement opportunities within their communities.

"One of the company's many goals is to support military veterans through aggressive recruiting programs," said SRS Site Manager James "Bud" Isom. "We're honored to receive this award from the VFW."

WSI-SRS employs 900 people, 61 percent of whom are veterans. Last year at Savannah River, WSI hired 72 new employees, 96 percent of whom were veterans. The VFW Department of South Carolina nominated WSI-SRS for the award.

We're incredibly fortunate to have a large number of military veterans throughout our various sties," said WSI President Dave Foley. "They've served their country with honor and now bring that same level of professionalism and dedication to our customers."

Koetter recognized for work at WSI - Nevada Test Site

WSI - Nevada Test Site ESS Technician Billy Koetter was recently recognized for his work in fielding the Night Owl system, a security technology initiative at the NTS.

According to site General Manager Dave Bradley, Billy was singled out by NSTec senior leadership, representatives of the Special Technology Laboratory managed by NSTec, and other governmental representatives for his skill and great sense of teamwork to ensure program success.
